TheMightyFINN — Your Fishing Guide
Chase the fish, then chase the paper
FINN has watched plenty of anglers land a fish worth an award and let it go unrecorded. His advice: know the program before you launch, so the measuring, the photo and the scale all happen while the fish is still in good shape.
- Read the rules before you launch, not after you land. Knowing the minimum length is worth more than a bigger net.
- Measure on a flat board with the jaw closed and the tail pinched, and photograph the fish on the board with the tape visible. That photo is what most agencies ask for first.
- A released fish can still earn recognition in many states through a length or catch-and-release category. Check before you decide to keep one for the wall.
Read this first
An award, a state record and a lake record are three different things
Most states run several programs side by side. Each entry in the directory below is tagged with the level it belongs to, so you know what you are applying for before you drive to a certified scale.
Award program
Recognition the agency issues for a qualifying catch.
State record
The largest fish of its species recorded in the state.
Lake record
A record for one water, not for the whole state.
Fishy Lips does not issue certificates, patch orders or record rulings for any state, and nothing here is an application. Every program links to the agency that runs it, because that agency decides whether your fish qualifies.

How this directory is checked
Program names, categories and requirements come from the issuing agency’s own pages, and each state carries the date it was last read. Where an agency does not publish a deadline or a qualifying size, the entry says so and sends you to the official rules rather than guessing.
State directory
Pick your state
36 states have an award program we could verify on the agency’s own site, 12 publish record information only, and 2 still need a program page confirmed. Search a state, agency or program name, or filter by the kind of recognition you are after.
